A Building Unlike Any Other: The Uncommon Building is UnderwayDohn Construction’s newest project is anything but ordinary. This project, titled “Uncommon”, will be a seven-story, mixed-use building. Uncommon is expected to take two years to complete, and aims to bring two floors of retail space and 180,000 square feet of apartments to the heart of Old Town Fort Collins. Uncommon’s Project Manager, Jennifer Chavies, has been working hard to make sure the project is getting off to the right start. Ron Shimpa, the Field Superintendent for Uncommon puts it plainly, “This is going to be a fun one.”Uncommon’s future tenants will enjoy a number of amenities including above grade parking, two courtyards, and 151 secured bike parking spots. Apartments will range from studios up to three-bedroom apartments across the five apartment floors. By Field Superintendents Robert Pruett and Rob BranamanFast-paced projects can be stressful. Yet, as we worked with the Poudre School District, subcontractors, and the Dohn crew, it was clear team work makes all the difference. The working relationship and trust we have with PSD is amazing. We have enjoyed our projects immensely and were able to learn so much. One of the highlights of the school projects was the opportunity to work with the Colorado State University interns; it is always a great privilege to pass down knowledge to the next generation of construction management.
The renovations themselves were interesting. Bennett Elementary School, for example, was the largest mechanical project Robert had been involved in. The building was gutted down to its framing and remodeled in only eleven weeks. As for Dunn Elementary School, the most bizarre part of the project was when the team removed a ceiling from the nurses’ office and discovered a wax coated paper Pepsi cup, which was probably from the 70’s! We experienced a wide range of emotions during the project, and I hope everyone has that much fun at least once in their lives.
Thanks to everyone working hard to stay on schedule, we got to enjoy the greatest payoff at the end of any project: a happy client. It is an honor to know our work on upgrading the air conditioning at the schools will improve the quality of the learning environment for students and teachers alike.
